고급 어휘를 공부해야 하는 이유

고급어휘는

공식적인 글쓰기를 할 때나 더 세련되게 들리고자 할 때 도움이 된다.

물론 문맥과 듣는 사람의 이해 수준에 맞는 어휘를 사용하는 것이 중요하다.

지식 자랑을 하려고 어렵고 복잡한 단어를 일상적인 대화에서 사용하면

오히려 의사소통에 방해가 되고 건방져 보일 수도 있다.

그러므로 항상 청중과 의사소통 하는 상황을 가려서 사용하자.

Casual: "good" | Advanced: "excellent" or "superb"

Casual: The movie was good; I enjoyed it. 

(영화 좋았어요. 즐거웠어요.)
Advanced: The movie was excellent; it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

(영화 훌륭했어요. 끝까지 흥미진진했어요.)

Casual: "nice" | Advanced: "pleasant" or "delightful"

Casual: It's a nice day outside; let's go for a walk.

(밖에 날씨가 좋네요. 산책하러 가요)
Advanced: The weather is so pleasant; I'm looking forward to a delightful stroll.

(날씨가 쾌적하네요. 즐겁게 산책할 수 있겠어요.)

Casual: "bad" | Advanced: "poor" or "detrimental"

Casual: The service at that restaurant was bad; I won't go back.

(저 레스토랑 서비스가 별로였어요. 다신 가지 않을 거예요.)
Advanced: The service at that restaurant was poor and had a detrimental impact on our dining experience.

(저 레스토랑은 서비스가 형편없었고, 외식했던 경험 중에 좋지 못한 기억으로 남아있어요.)

Casual: "big" | Advanced: "enormous" or "gigantic"

Casual: That's a big tree in the park.

(공원에 큰 나무가 있어요.)
Advanced: Look at that enormous tree in the park; it must be centuries old.

(공원에 저 거대한 나무를 봐요. 수백 년은 된 나무일 거예요.)

Casual: The apartment is small, but it's cozy.

(그 아파트는 작지만 아늑해요.)
Advanced: The apartment is minuscule, but it has a charm of its own.

(그녀는 아주 멋진 미소로 방을 환하게 밝혀주는 아름다운 여자예요.)

(그 코미디언 재밌어요. 정말 많이 웃은 것 같아요.) 

Advanced: The comedian's performance was hilarious, and it kept the audience amused throughout the show.

(그 코미디언의 공연은 우스꽝스럽고, 관객들을 즐겁게 해 주었어요.)

Casual: They are happy about their new house.

(그들은 새 집 때문에 기뻐해요.)
Advanced: They are ecstatic and overjoyed about their new house; it's a dream come true for them.

(그들은 새 집 때문에 활황하고 매우 기뻐해요. 그들에게 꿈이 실현된 거예요.)
