어떤 문장이 틀린 걸까?

미국 실생활 영어 알려드리는 카니잉글리시입니다.

 

1) There is a little water 

2) There is little water

 

셀 수 있는 단수 명사 앞에 'a'를 붙인다.

그런데 water는 아무리 생각해 봐도 셀 수 없는 명사 같은데 

앞에 a가 들어갔으니 당연히 1)이 틀린 거 아닌가 싶은 분들 계실 거 같습니다.

이렇게 허무할 거면 문제를 내지 않았겠죠 ^^

 

정답은 "틀린 문장은 없다"입니다.

1) There is a little water.: 약간의 물이 있다. 

2) There is little water.: 물이 거의 없다. 

이런 식으로 해석이 됩니다. 

 

1)은 약간의 물이 있으므로 마실 수 있다는 느낌이 드는 긍정적인 문장이고

2)는 물이 거의 없어서 마실 수 없다는 느낌이 드는 부정적인 문장입니다.

고로 둘 다 맞는 문장입니다!

 

고작 a 하나,

한 끝 차이인데 뜻이 완전히 달라집니다.

알면 알수록 재미있는 영어의 매력 아닐까 싶네요 ^^
