미국 생활 영어: (keep your eye) on the ball

 

미국에서는 회사에서 직원에게 오늘 일 잘했어라고 말할 때

Awesome!

You rock!

You dope!

Killing it!

등 다양하게 칭찬해 줍니다. 

칭찬은 언제나 직원들의 사기를 높여주고 기분 좋게 해 주죠.

그런데 이런 말들은 보고서나 이메일 등 직장상사가 볼 수 있는 문서에 글로 쓸 때는 

부적절해 보입니다. 

미국 문화가 아무리 위아래가 없다지만 

보고서에까지 은어를 사용하는 문화는 아직 정착하지 않은 것 같아요.

 

직원이 일을 잘했다고 글로 쓸 때는 

Great, remarkable과 같은 단어들이 더 좋을 듯합니다. 

그리고 on the ball이라는 말로 칭찬을 하기도 합니다.

실생활에서 자주 사용되는 말입니다. 

 

On the ball은 Keep your eye on the ball이라는 말에서 유래가 되었다고 전해집니다.

크리켓, 테니스에서 시작되었다는 의견도 많지만

야구에서 시작되었다는 의견이 지배적입니다. 

저는 야구팬이라 야구에 한표 던지겠습니다. 

 

야구에서 타자가 공을 끝까지 잘 봐야 잘 때릴 수 있는 것은 누구나 아는 사실입니다. 

그래서 공에서 눈을 떼지 마라. 끝까지 잘 봐라.라는 뜻의

Keep your eye on the ball이라는 말이 생겨났다고 합니다.

이 말이 어원이 되어 짧게 on the ball이라는 관용구가 만들어졌습니다.

"상황에 맞게 일 처리를 잘한다" 정도로 해석하면 좋을 것 같습니다. 

쉽게 "일 머리가 잘 돌아간다"라고 여기셔도 됩니다.
