미국에서 자주 쓰는 생활 영어: When pigs fly

안녕하세요.

미국식 영어 회화 알려드리는 카니잉글리시입니다.

 

"돼지가 날 때" 재밌는 표현의 이 말은

어떤 일이 매우 불가능하거나

발생하기 어려운 것을 나타내는 관용적인 표현입니다.

해가 서쪽에서 뜰 때 정도 될 것 같습니다. 

이 표현은 종종 비현실적이거나 터무니없는 아이디어를 거부하거나

배제하는 용도로 유머적으로 사용됩니다. 

이 말을 듣는 사람은 

그게 되겠냐? 네가 되겠어? 말도 안 되지. (당연히 안되지) 이런 뉘앙스로 들립니다.

상황에 따라 기분 나쁠 수 있으니 재치 있게 사용하시기 바랍니다. 

 

예문으로 살펴보면 이해사 더 빠를 것 같습니다.

Dana: "That'd be the day, when pigs fly!"

6. Debating Unlikely Events:
Sam: "I think I'll become a professional basketball player."
Liz: "Yeah, and I'll be your coach when pigs fly."

7. Expressing Doubt:
Mark: "I'll finish writing my novel in a week."

당연하지, 돼지가 날면 너도 피아노 칠 수 있어.

다음 주말에 스카이다이빙 갈 생각이야.

스카이다이빙? 네가 무슨? 돼지도 날겠다.

하하. 당연하지. 돼지가 날면 그것도 가능하겠다.

500 페이지 짜리 소설을? 돼지도 날겠다.

앞으로 1년 동안 샐러드만 먹고살 거야.

그래, 돼지도 날으는데 뭔들 못할 게 있겠니.
