미국에서 자주 쓰는 생활 영어: Bite the bullet

 
안녕하세요 
미국에서 자주 쓰는 생활 영어회화 알려드리는 카니잉글리시입니다. 
 
미국에는 문화적으로 뿐만 아니라 법적으로도 한국과 많이 다르다는 것을 알 수 있는데요.
그중에 총기 합법화는 대표적인 사례입니다.
그래서인지 총이나 총알에 관련된 이디엄도 많은 것 같습니다. 
오늘 알려드릴 Bite the bullet 에서도 역시 bullet 총알이라는 뜻의 단어가 들어갑니다. 
단어가 주는 어감과 다르게 이 표현은 상당히 멋진 의미를 담고 있습니다. 
미국인이 정말 정말 자주 쓰는 표현 중 하나입니다. 
 
직역하면 '총알을 물다'
힘든 상황에 당당하게 대면하다 라는 의미입니다.
어려운 또는 불쾌한 상황을 용기와 결의를 가지고 직면하며,
때로는 고통과 어려움을 견디는 것을 의미합니다.
이 표현은 문제를 용감하게 직면하고 피하지 않고 직면하는 것을 강조합니다. 
과거에 병사들이 수술중에 고통을 견디기 위해
탄알을 물고 있는 모습에서 유래되었다고 하네요.
오늘날 이 표현은 더 넓은 맥락에서 사용되며,
어려운 문제를 용기있게 대면하라는 취지로 사용됩니다!
