이번 글은 헤드부터 제목에 충실한 글이다.

오늘 배울 표현은 요점을 말해봐를 영어로 말하기이다

요점을 말해 "Get to the point",

간단히 말하자면 "Long story short" 와 비슷하지만

살짝은 낯설수 있는 표현이다. 

바로 Cut to the chase라는 표현이다. 

이 표현 역시 요점만 말하다 라는 뜻이다.

 

가끔 친구나 회사에서 일하다보면 장황한 설명으로 분위기를 지루하게 만드는 사람이 있다. 

"딱 잘라서" 요점만 말해~ 혹은 "거두절미"하고 요점만 말해~ 

이렇게 단호하게 말해야 할 필요가 있다.

그럴때 Get to the point나 Long story short보다 강렬한 느낌으로 사용하면 좋다. 

 

물론 Get to the point나 Long story short도

상황에 따라서 억양이나 표정의 도움으로 냉정하고 단호하게 들린다.

하지만 Cut to the chase 표현 하나 더 알아 놓으면

표정이나 억양의 부수적인 도움 없이

"딱 잘라서 요점만 간단히!" 단호하게 표현할수 있다.

회사 CEO의 프레젠테이션은 간결하고 명확했다. 장황한 사전 설명없이 곧바로 회사의 미래 성장 전략의 윤곽을 요점 잡아 발표했기때문이다.   

Instead of dwelling on the background story, 

the detective preferred to cut to the chase and focus on the critical clues that would help solve the case.

형사는 스토리 배경보다는 사건을 해결할수 있는 단서에 초점을 맞춰 사건의 요지에 집중하는 것을 선호했습니다.  

John was telling a long story about his trip, 

but I asked him to cut to the chase and tell us if he enjoyed it or not.

존은 자신의 여행에 대해서 길게 이야기 하고 있었지만, 나는 간단하게 좋았냐 싫었냐 짧게 말해달라고 물어봤습니다.  

 

In a business meeting, 

the manager cut to the chase and addressed the urgent issues first before discussing other matters.

비지니스 미팅중에, 매니저는 다른 안건을 논의하기 전에 단호하게 긴급한 사안에 대한 이야기를 먼저 꺼냈습니다.   

 

I don't have much time, 

so can you cut to the chase and give me the key points of the report?

제가 좀 바빠서 그런데 불필요한 설명 줄이고 보고서의 핵심만 알려주시겠습니까? 

 

In the movie review, 

the critic cut to the chase and quickly mentioned the film's major strengths and weaknesses.

영화 리뷰에서 그 평론가는 긴 설명보다는 재빠르게 그 영화의 장단점을 언급하였습니다. 

The professor encouraged the students to cut to the chase in their presentations and focus 

on the most critical research findings.

교수님은 학생들에게 핵심 연구 결과에 집중하여 발표하도록 격려했습니다.
